In a major milestone for Japan’s transport industry, an Indonesian man is set to become the first foreign bus driver under the country’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program.
Forty-year-old Iyus will begin working as a sightseeing bus driver in Tokyo starting in April, following the recent expansion of Japan’s immigration policies to include the road transport sector. This change allows foreign workers with specialized skills to seek employment as taxi and bus drivers.
Japan revised its immigration laws last year to address labor shortages and open more opportunities for foreign workers. As part of this initiative, the first eligibility test for bus drivers under the SSW No.1 visa was held in December 2024—where Iyus was the only candidate to pass.
Speaking at a press conference at his company’s headquarters in Okayama, Iyus shared his excitement: “Becoming a professional driver in Japan is like a dream come true. My goal is to provide safe and comfortable service to passengers.”
Shinji Ogami, head of the Ryobi Group’s bus and rail division, expressed optimism about the impact of foreign drivers in Japan’s growing tourism sector. “With the increase in international visitors, Iyus will help provide quality service that meets their needs,” he stated.
As Japan continues to welcome foreign talent into new industries, Iyus’ success paves the way for more international workers to enter the country’s transportation sector.
