Japan saw an all-time high in February tourism, with 3.26 million foreign visitors—a 16.9% increase from the previous year—driven by strong demand for winter sports and travel during the Chinese New Year holiday, according to government data.

For the first time, February’s visitor count surpassed 3 million, with notable surges in travelers from Australia and the United States, as reported by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).

South Korea led the way with 847,300 visitors, marking a 3.5% increase and setting a record for the month. China followed closely with 722,700 visitors—up 57.3%—partly due to expanded flight routes between the two countries.

Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Naoya Haraikawa highlighted the resilience of the tourism sector, stating, “Despite a shorter Lunar New Year holiday compared to last year, visitor numbers continued to rise, showing strong momentum.”

Travelers from Australia and the U.S. also reached record numbers for February, increasing by 33.5% and 28.8%, respectively. A total of 20 countries and regions, including Vietnam, Taiwan, and the U.K., reported their highest-ever visitor numbers for the month.

With a cumulative 7.04 million foreign visitors in the first two months of 2025—28.5% higher than the same period last year—Japan’s tourism sector continues to experience remarkable growth.
