In response to ongoing labor shortages in the railway industry, East Japan Railway (JR East) is introducing a specialized training program for foreign workers. This initiative aims to develop a skilled workforce while supporting the long-term sustainability of railway operations in Japan.
JR East President and CEO Kise Yoichi emphasized that the program is designed to strengthen and expand the industry by equipping foreign trainees with essential skills. The initiative follows Japan’s recent policy change, which added the railway sector to a specialized residency program allowing skilled foreign workers to seek employment in the country.
Starting in April, JR East will officially launch its training program, with a primary focus on railway car and track maintenance. The company aims to train approximately 100 foreign workers annually, offering them valuable technical expertise and hands-on experience.
This month, JR East welcomed 25 trainees from Indonesia and Vietnam. Upon successfully completing their training and obtaining the required residency visa, these trainees will be offered employment starting this summer.
As Japan continues to address labor shortages in critical industries, programs like this could pave the way for greater inclusion of foreign talent in the country’s workforce.
